Hello,
My name is Vincent, i live in France. I help to develop Movim, an internationnal social network, it haven't the goal to be a concurrent against Facebook but to purpose a free and decentralized alternative, in respect to Free Software philosophy.
Discover the project : http://movim.eu/ But be careful, it's still in development (print screen).
How to contribute ?
We need translators contributors for our project : we wish Movim to be understandable in as many languages as possible, and even in some dialects for each country !
So we think to purpose Movim in your language (or in the dialect of your choice) could permit to enlarge the diffusion of this new Social Network.
EDIT : Thanks for your valuable contribution ! You can discover Movim in danish !

Diaspora?

Diaspora isn't based on XMPP, a messaging protocol that Facebook or G+ uses. We think that the interoperability is primary.

I seams to remember hearing the names onesocialweb and appleseed(being php5 based) It does sounds a bit similar to onesocialweb.
facebook chat bruger svjv iøvrigt simple(SIP) og ikke XMPP(jabber), jeg tror ikke diaspora har frigivet realistisk kode endnu mens appleseed vist nok virker.

Onesocialweb is most a kind of reflexion project than a working project !
Diaspora is open source, but their compatibility layer with XMPP will be very hard to be functional.
Facebook uses XMPP for the tchat, it's sure.

I would say that a project is fairly well equipped for interoperability basing itself on XMPP? It even has a voice/video aspect through Jingle.

Okay, actually -
Inching our way back to the point:
What is the licensing, how is the localisation performed, what kind of effort is required, as in how many text strings are we talking about?

I think that using the XMPP sound enticing, personally i dont care about Facebook interoperability , and i would recon that most people concerned about Facebook or Google+ privacy issues and content ownership wont focus on that .
What would be awesome is a truely distributed social network where you own your data , you decide which servers its on and more importantly in which countries your data is. XMPP seems like a protocol where you can implement IM video-chat and voice-chat which would truely would be killer features in itself since the current FOSS software for video chat AFAIK is messy and not stable yet.

@mjjzf : Actually Movim is a web interface using BOSH (modul for XMPP), it's like a CMS. You could install Movim on you personal Web server (to stock your pictures, Apache out-of-the-box is the minimum requirement) using a XMPP account based on another server (like jappix.com, for instant messaging).
=> Movim is under GNU Affero General Public License
=> Movim website is under CC-By.
The geolocation, and more generaly all privacy policies are "lock-based" by default. It's at the user to unlock what he want to be public.
@dklinux : Absolutly ! Movim do that, Movim IS "a truely distributed social network where you own your data" : @home for example ! I don't know if you think to a P2P architecture when you say "truely" ? There are lot of problems in this case, like identify an user. How to remember your address when you move, when you change of IP ? How to resolve NAT if two users are "truly" on P2P ?
Movim has the objective to be accessible and easy to use. XMPP was (and is) the best choice. The last problem for Jingle is to chose a codec. Google has is own, and would impose his standar. This feature will be implemented later, because it's client side (in javascript) .
I hope I have answered all your questions :)
I've update the list (thanks to a generous contributor, translations have very much advanced).

btw, perhaps you should change the image with the language, so that danish isnt written in french.
furthermore, on the frontpage, that snippet viewing the php code, that is a horrible and nasty way of doing xml output.

Thanks very much to all of you !

It is interesting, I admit. I will keep an eye on it.
Unfortunately, I do not have the qualifications to review the code quality - I think security is on everyone's mind for this kind of thing.

Hello all,
Near one year later, i would show you what Movim become : https://movim.etenil.net/
The 0.5 version has been released this week, see that page for more informations http://blog.movim.eu/and-here-is-movim-0-5-snowbal...
We still need your help to offer our software in your language, if you want to contribute like me, add some strings in your list.
Small contributions are as important as large, we need every possible effort to accomplish the feat to propose a multilingual decentralized social network! It's Open Source and much more!
You could meet our team on this XMPP chan: movim@conference.movim.eu
Please help us =)
