Test af 3D gaming på diverse desktops.
Phoronix har testet de mest gængse desktops og set hvorledes de yder i 3D-spil.

XFCE og GNOME-Shell er generelt de hurtigste.
Overall the results were interesting from the range of Linux OpenGL benchmarks conducted under Unity, Unity 2D, GNOME Shell, GNOME Classic, KDE Plasma, and Xfce on Ubuntu 12.04. There are some exceptions, but across the driver configurations the desktops to commonly perform the best were Xfce 4.8 and GNOME Shell 3.2.2.1. The default Unity desktop was a mix in terms of performance across the different OpenGL workloads. The outlier to these results though is the AMD Catalyst driver, which for the most part performed the same regardless of desktop environment / window manager.
Desværre kørte testen ikke med den nyeste Catalyst-driver. Catalyst 12.1 indeholder visual fixes og performance fixes til GNOME-Shell.

De burde også have testet

Iflg testen er dette ikke tilfældet , men det lader også til at det primært er den lukkede nvidia driver der har mest uregulær adfærd, det er en lidt spildt adfærd da dette vidner om software finurligheder og jeg ville meget gerne have haft at phoronix gik lidt videre og prøve at finde ud af hvad der skete i WM imens spillet burde have beslag på alle grafik resurser .
Det er lidt det samme med server software, medmindre du udnytter specifikke OS features bør server software der ikke deler ressourcer med andre stykker software performe mere eller mindre ens på windows solaris linux etc.
